Our Roots
Champion House Of Care Project One Inc. (CHOC) started in 2019 with the goal is to touch and change the lives of kids living in transition housing and homeless. Our founder and executive director Janette Kinard, noticed parents needed support outside of school and a place for their adult children to learn. The reality is there are not many places that focus on the entire family. CHOC wants their clients (called champions) and their families to succeed. Society has made people believe individuals with special needs cannot assist in society. Started a non-profit that helped them give food and clothes to the homeless, support one another, and interact with the community. Our Slogan says it all; we challenge not only our champions, but also society. We hope to see Champion House of Care advocates to dispel this myth. Our Champions and Partners are very active in Mecklenburg County and surrounding areas making sure we are giving back to the community. Lastly, when this is accomplished, we are all winners!
We provide resources and scholarships for families in need of care and summer camp, as well as referrals for other basic needs.
Initiatives
Champion Heights is designed to provide adult and adolescent individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities opportunities to live an unexpected life. Through community outreach events, we provide our “Champions” with recreational volunteerism opportunities to increase their communication skills, community living skills, and job training skills. “Bridge the Gap” is an initiative to provide training to police officers on behaviors of young adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Our aim was to change the stigma around our population’s interactions with the police force in general society. During the time of Walter Scott's shooting, we began this initiative to shed a positive light on local law enforcement. We planned a Thanksgiving Dinner and a Christmas dinner for the CMPD North Tryon Division to increase the visibility of our population and show our appreciation for law enforcement. We also executed our first annual softball game to provide our champions with intramural sports interactions from which they are normally prohibited. The "West Charlotte Transient Child Initiative" provides the homeless children in the transitional housing motels of West Charlotte, necessities to increase school performance and decrease bullying from peers. We collect coats and gloves at winter to distribute, 2600 backpacks, and school supplies in the fall to provide them with necessities before the first day of school, food every day and we partner with Marine Corp Toys for Tots, servicing 500 children with toys at Christmas. The "Community Partnership Initiative" connects our population with the Uptown Hilton Hotel and Hampton Garden Inn to provide job training in housekeeping, life skills, and customer service. The expected results of all of our initiatives are to increase the community involvement of our champions in the greater Charlotte society and provide adequate job training for future employment.
